August 16th

馃挮On Saturday, I observed two professors in the classroom because my team teacher could not come. It was interesting to see how they had different approaches to interacting with students.

9:00 a.m. Class – Structured and Focused

馃憠In the 9 a.m. class, the first professor asked the students their names, including their last name. She spoke at a steady volume and pace, adding emphasis to the pronunciation of words that students had mispronounced. She tried to make eye contact with each student—although not at the same time, because that would be impossible. She gave each of them her attention to help them improve their performance.

馃憖She didn't use many facial expressions and stayed up the whole class monitoring the students. Except when they asked her a question, she sat down at a desk next to them to create proximity. She spoke Spanish to a boy who was grumbling because he had to stand up. She told him that she could not believe he was tired if he had been sitting the whole class. Additionally, she conveyed expressions of correctness or approval with her eyebrows.

馃懇‍馃彨At the end of class, the professor told me that she manages parents with mano dura, being consistent with her actions and words. She also said that if parents had problems with her, she recommended they contact Tr谩mites y Solicitudes.

11:00 a.m. Class – Warm and Interactive

馃憠The second professor at 11 a.m. was less formal and treated students with tenderness. She raised her voice and had a stronger tone when addressing students who were misbehaving. She made eye contact with all students and asked them their names, but just the first one, and she contracted it if it was possible.

馃憖The teacher used several techniques to encourage interaction among the students. She randomly paired them to work on certain activities and answer various questions, making sure they understood what was said. She used her hands to demonstrate what she wanted to exemplify. She sat down most of the class.

馃懇‍馃彨At the end of the class, the teacher told me that she communicates with parents as clearly as possible and uses the resources provided by the Colombo to handle situations with them. Additionally, she tends to propose creating a WhatsApp group to keep parents informed about news and announcements in Q10.

Conclusion

馃挰Both professors demonstrated a strong commitment to their students, though in different ways: one through consistency and structure, and the other through empathy and collaboration. Observing these contrasting yet effective teaching styles was a great learning opportunity. Combining some techniques from both styles can create a productive and comforting learning environment.

  1. It is very interesting that you were able to identify the different strategies used by various teachers. I really appreciate your conclusion, as it highlights that there are many effective ways to connect with students, especially when they face challenges engaging with the lesson. This awareness shows strong reflective skills and an understanding of the importance of adapting teaching approaches to meet students’ needs.
